Greg Kinnear Bonding With Miley Cyrus

The Last Song is being dreamed up as the way to introduce Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, to adult audiences, marking a departure from the TV show and movies that have made her famous. But in all honestly, the movie– an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, naturally– isn’t sounding like much of a stretch. Cyrus will play a rebellious teenager sent to live for the summer with her estranged father, whom she bonds with through their one common connection: music. It’s pretty much exactly what happens in a single scene of Hannah Montana: The Movie, but stretched to feature length.
And I can’t decide whether or not I should be interested in the movie because Greg Kinnear has signed on to be the dad (Kelly Preston will play the mom, according to THR). We all love Greg Kinnear when he’s good– As Good As It Gets, Little Miss Sunshine– but he’s also got a way of popping up in movies no one particularly wants to see. Are we going to get the interesting and dynamic Kinnear in this one, or the bland placeholder? Actually, I don’t really want to guess this– it’s just depressing.
