TV Recap So You Think You Can Dance – Top 10 Results

Did America choose the right two dancers to go home this week? Honestly, especially given last nights performances, I really think they did. Tonight was the first elimination round of So You Think You Can Dance when the judges didnt have a say in who went home. That was a good thing, considering Nigel wasnt in attendance.
While Nigel was off in the U.K. getting an honorary college degree, the contestants on SYTYCD were busy learning their fate as the votes were revealed. Unlike in previous weeks, where the bottom vote-getters had the opportunity to redeem themselves with a solo performance, in the hopes that the judges would keep them around, tonight it all came down to the votes and for one guy and one girl, that meant elimination.
The episode opened with a fabulous group performance choreographed by Wade and Amanda Robson, where in the guys danced around in ninja attire and the girls colorfully accessorized the otherwise dark piece. Afterward, I was pleased that Cat made mention of the Emmy nominations some of the choreographers received for performances from last season. We got clips of the dances, including Mia Michaels fantastic Mercy door-dance featuring Katee and Twitch. I wish Cat wouldve been able to announce her own nomination for Outstanding Reality Show host, but she didnt receive one. More on my feelings on that here. Still, big congrats to the choreographers who were recognized for their brilliant routines.
We got filler in the form of another promo for the fall season along with a performance from the Black Eyed Peas. Now for the results. It came down to the bottom two guys and bottom two girls. I wasnt surprised at all to see Randi or Melissa in the bottom two. I think a lot of Randis popularity in previous weeks came from being teamed up with Evan, who appears to be one of the favorites among the squealing girls in the audience and probably a lot of the voters. Randis talented by last nights performance, added to a decent, but not great solo made her bottom two status pretty predictable. As for Melissa, shes amazing but shes fighting and uphill battle with the ballet. Debbie was right when she told her we need to see more from her in her solos. Style and technique are only going to take her so far. She needs to wow the people who are picking up their phones to dial at the end of the episode.
As for the guys, Kupono being in the bottom three was no surprise, given the mess of a Paso Doble he and Randi danced last night. Plus, lets face it, hes been struggling with the votes for a while now. I do have to say, I loved his solo tonight, but not enough to want him to stick around. As for Ade, while I cant say I wouldve predicted him being in the bottom three, I think he was out-performed by his partner last night and despite his exciting, tumbly solo, Jeanette won most of the credit for the partner dance, leaving Ade to scrounge for votes.
It was Kupono and Randi who were eliminated and I cant say that Im disappointed. Both were talented dancers but their performance last night was an awkward mess and I thought they shared the blame for that equally. As for Melissa and Ade, I think both of them will have to bring something big to next weeks performances, both with their solos and with the partner routines. Some of the other dancers are already starting to step up their game and gain more attention with their routines. If either of these two want to stick around for another week, well need to see their A-games, or they have to hope that some of the other contestants have an off-week.
