Maggie Gyllenhaals made a name for herself as a dependable actress, but shes never really been any better than she was in the complicated, edgy, sadomasochistic sex movie Secretary. She does sex movies like nobody else. So theres good reason to be excited about Maggies next project, in which shell help invent the first vibrator.
The movie is called Hysteria and its set in the Victorian-era. Gyllenhaal tells the , I play a firecracker whose father is a doctor who is in the business of curing hysterical women. He cures them basically by getting them off and that actually happened. I end up having a sort of unexpected love affair with this guy who works for him, and who by mistake invents the vibrator. Believe it or not, this idea is being classified as a rom-com.
The plot may sound far-fetched, modern moral delusions suggest to people that vibrators were invented yesterday, but its not. Theyve actually been around for awhile and back before their husbands learned to give a damn, women really did go to doctors to get off. It was viewed as therapeutic, much like a Swedish massage. At the time Doctor delivered orgasm was a common cure for hysteria. Later in the 50s, hysterias the sort of thing you might have seen Cary Grant curing with a good slap. Given the options, the medicinal orgasm was probably a better solution.
Character actor Jonathan Pryce (he played Elizabeth Swanns father in Pirates of the Caribbean) will play Maggie Gyllenhaals hysteria-curing doctor father. Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett are in the film too, as fellow medics, and its they who discover the orgasmic miracle that is vibration.

If you’re not a child under the age of 10 or don’t have any of your own, you may be surprised to learn that not only does Maggie Gyllenhaal play a lead role in Nanny McPhee Returns, but she’s actually really good in it, nailing the right comic tone and posh British accent. She’s doing the publicity rounds now to promote the movie, and talking to that she’ll have an upcoming role opposite her husband, Peter Sarsgaard.
We learned that Sarsgaard would be starring in a biopic about bluegrass musician Bill Monroe, but apparently she’ll be joining him– and bringing her Oscar-winning Crazy Heart collaborator T. Bone Burnett with her:
This the first we’ve heard of T. Bone Burnett’s involvement, and if a Gyllenhaal-Sarsgaard matchup weren’t enough to get me interested, that definitely seals the deal. With Khouri still working on the script it will probably be a while before we see the final product, but isn’t this kind of match-up worth the wait? The two said that they wouldn’t team up again at the movies (they worked together in a production of Uncle Vanya in New York), but I suppose anyone will change their mind if the right project comes along. All the better for us, I’d say.

Yeah, we all love Jeff Bridges when he’s rocking the evil shaved head in Iron Man 2 or reinventing the bathrobe as The Dude. But can those of you who love Jeff Bridges and harbor a crush on Maggie Gyllenhaal– and that probably includes all of us– handle the sight of him wooing Jake’s older sister?
This romantic pairing actually happens in Crazy Heart, an indie drama just picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight. According to Variety Bridges plays an aging country singer who gets a new lease on life through a relationship with reporter (Gyllenhaal). He’s also got a mentor to deal with, played by Robert Duvall, and is a mentor himself to an up-and-comer played by Colin Farrell. Yes, Colin Farrell is apparently playing a country singer. It really says something that this isn’t the strangest part of the story.
Of course, Searchlight has just about flawless taste when it comes to picking up indies, and their plan to release the film next spring makes it sound like a nice crowd-pleaser, not an Oscar juggernaut like Slumdog Millionaire. But really, The Dude and Rachel Dawes, together? Are we really going to let them make this happen?
